Chapter 23

Colton

When I answer her question, ‘are you over her?’, I feel it fitting to ask another one of my own. After she wipes her eyes again, she consents. “Why did you agree to marry the first guy you had a relationship with? Was it just because your dad hooked you up with him?” My tone is not condescending; more like I’m asking her to level with me.

“It’s not as simple as it sounds, Colton. My dad and I are very close, and because up until today, he and my sister didn’t talk for thirteen years, and my mom left and remarried years ago, so I’m all he really has left, aside from business associates. I didn’t want to let him down. Dad means everything to me, and he thought he knew what was best for me.”

“I bet he feels like a turd now…wait, does he know?”

“Yeah, he found out. The loser called him looking for me. Dad’s in town now.”

“He sounds like an honourable man.”

She smiles warmly. “He is. Aside from Liz, he’s my best friend. He would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him.”

“Poor guy. How was he to know?”

Julia shrugs and her eyes begin to get heavy. Watching her wind down I yawn. It’s contagious. “You think you’re okay to go to sleep now?”

She wiggles further into the sheets and sighs contentedly. “Just stay a little while longer. Just until I fall asleep.”

It’s endearing that she’s so child-like. I climb over the bed and lay on the pillow beside her. “You want me to turn the light off?”

“Hm.” She answers, opening her eyes halfway.

Her eyes close and after a few minutes, I’m scared to move, to startle her, so I stay. I don’t even bother to turn off the lamp. I had no idea Wade would be there in the morning.

What an asshole when he showed up. The hungry look he gave her, checking out her breasts, made me want to plough him. If he wasn’t my brother, I would have. It looked bad; us sleeping in my bed together. Thank God I had the sense to stay on top of the sheets. I didn’t trust myself to go under them. Knowing her warm, soft body was laying there, I might not have been able to stop myself. It had been way too long since I’d been with a woman.

The idea of having her at Mingles tonight wasn’t the worst idea. It just meant my attention would be divided between her and Wade. Although Wade I watched for different reasons. Knowing him, he hooked up last night when he wasn’t under my watchful eye, so tonight he might be a little tamer with the ladies, among other things. As long as both were safe, Julia could hang out at the club every night until the dirt bag is caught or gone for good.

After Wade left, we called the police. They came by and took a statement and a description of what John looks like.
